The tradition of Bretzelsonndeg in Luxembourg
Bretzelsonndeg is a custom that dates back to the 18th century, celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent. According to tradition, men offer a pretzel to their beloved as a symbol of their love. If the women share these feelings, they return the gesture with an egg on Easter Sunday. Conversely, if they are not interested, the man receives an empty basket, hence the expression "De Kuerf kréien," meaning "To get a basket."

250g of butter
A pinch of salt
500g of flour
50g of powdered sugar
1 packet of yeast
13cl of warm milk
1 packet of vanilla sugar
1 egg
Condensed milk
In a bowl, mix the yeast with the milk and a teaspoon of sugar. Let it rest for 15 minutes.
Pour the flour into a large bowl and make a well in the center.
Place the remaining 50g of sugar, vanilla sugar, salt, egg, and small pieces of butter around the edges of the well. Pour the dissolved yeast into the center of the well.
Knead the mixture for 5 minutes using a mixer with kneading hooks, starting at low speed and then increasing to high speed.
Set aside a small portion of the dough for decorative purposes, then divide the rest into three equal parts.
Shape each part into ropes, braid them together, and tie them to form pretzels.
With the reserved dough, shape a flower and leaves.
Using a brush, coat all the pretzels with condensed milk. Let them rest for 30 minutes in a warm place. Then, preheat your oven to 200°C (Th 6) and bake the pretzels for 40 minutes.
