Design: two Pro iPhones with a similar size
At first glance, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro remain very similar. Both models feature a 6.3-inch display and a Pro design made from aluminium.
The iPhone 18 Pro introduces a new aluminium unibody design, with a Ceramic Shield 2 front and Ceramic Shield back. It is available in four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier and Bordeaux.
The iPhone 17 Pro also features an aluminium unibody design and Ceramic Shield 2 front. It is available in Silver, Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue.
The display remains the same size across both generations: 6.3 inches, with a resolution of 2,622 × 1,206 pixels and ProMotion up to 120Hz.
A20 Pro vs A19 Pro: what about performance?
This is one of the main differences between the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro.
The iPhone 17 Pro is powered by the A19 Pro chip, while the iPhone 18 Pro moves to the A20 Pro.
Apple says the A20 Pro can deliver up to 40% more graphics performance compared with the iPhone 17 Pro. The new chip is also designed to work with a next-generation vapor chamber to improve thermal management during intensive use.
A vapor chamber that is three times larger
The iPhone 17 Pro already features a vapor chamber designed to improve thermal management.
With the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple has significantly increased its size. The next-generation vapor chamber is said to be three times larger than the one in the iPhone 17 Pro.
According to Apple, this allows the iPhone 18 Pro to deliver up to 40% more sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro under the stated test conditions.
This improvement is particularly relevant for demanding tasks such as gaming, video editing and running artificial intelligence models.
Camera: variable aperture comes to iPhone 18 Pro
Photography is another major difference between the two generations.
The iPhone 17 Pro features a Pro camera system with three 48MP sensors: Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto.
The iPhone 18 Pro keeps the same basic configuration, but its 48MP Fusion Main camera now features a variable aperture.
Why does variable aperture matter?
Aperture controls how much light enters the lens and can also affect depth of field.
On the iPhone 18 Pro, the main camera aperture can be adjusted across several values, from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0. This provides greater control over light and depth of field, particularly for portraits and photography in challenging lighting conditions.
The iPhone 18 Pro also features a 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera with optical-quality zoom up to 8x, compared with the 48MP Telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom on the iPhone 17 Pro.
Front camera: iPhone 18 Pro introduces Center Stage
Both models feature an 18MP front camera.
However, the iPhone 18 Pro adds the Center Stage front camera, designed to automatically keep the subject better framed during photos and video calls.
It can track faces and adjust the framing to keep people within the shot.
Battery life: the iPhone 18 Pro lasts longer
Battery life is also improved with the iPhone 18 Pro.
Apple claims up to 34 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro Max can reach up to 43 hours of video playback.
The improvement is linked to the new battery design and the power efficiency of the A20 Pro chip.
For a direct comparison, Apple claims up to 6 additional hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro Max compared with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Battery life varies depending on the model and type of use.
Charging: iPhone 18 Pro charges faster
The iPhone 18 Pro also improves wired charging.
With a compatible 60W or higher power adapter, Apple claims up to 50% charge in around 15 minutes.
The iPhone 18 Pro also supports wireless charging of up to 50% in around 30 minutes when using a compatible adapter and MagSafe charger.
Storage: up to 2TB on iPhone 18 Pro
The iPhone 17 Pro is available with 256GB, 512GB and 1TB of storage.
The iPhone 18 Pro keeps these three capacities and adds a 2TB version.
This additional capacity may be particularly useful for people who store large amounts of photos, videos or files directly on their iPhone.
iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro: what are the differences in everyday use?
The two models remain similar in several areas: a 6.3-inch display, ProMotion up to 120Hz, an aluminium Pro design and a camera system featuring three 48MP sensors.
The main differences are more relevant for the following use cases:
