5G for the 3rd industrial revolution.

We have previously seen that 5G will offer new opportunities in the field of entertainment, health and education. This week, we focus on the prospects it opens up for the industry sector.

Characterised by the convergence of information and communication technologies, renewable energies and new means of transport, the third industrial revolution constitutes a new economic paradigm. It aims, in particular, to address the climate and environmental issues and challenges we are facing. Since 2016, Luxembourg has been engaged in this third industrial revolution, a process that should lead the country towards a sustainable, intelligent and connected economy by 2050.

A more digital industry

Relying on digital tools and technologies - the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, big data, edge computing, intelligent networks, automation, etc. - Industry 4.0 will enable Luxembourg companies to enter a new era. - An era in which productivity and efficiency will be maximised. An era where the costs and environmental footprint of economic activities will be reduced.

In 2018, the European Union also embarked on its own digitisation of industry to boost the continent's competitiveness. From research to customer relations, all links in the industry's value chain can be reinvented and digitally integrated. Machines, for example, will become intelligent. It will be possible to carry out predictive maintenance. As for the employees, they will be accompanied and supported in their work.

5G to support this new industry

To be deployed in an optimal manner and to allow immediate transmission of the massive data they generate, the new technologies will have to rely on the development of the 5G network. Offering ultra-fast data rates and very low latency, 5G provides the connectivity needed for this Industry 4.0.

This new generation of network will transform the way we work. Smarter, more powerful and more energy efficient, 5G will enable tools and people to connect instantly, to interact easily, remotely and securely. Real-time, high-definition image transmissions and analysis, combined with equipment such as smart glasses, will lead to significant gains in competitiveness and safety for operators.

In addition, industrial processes will be subject to evolution. Data from equipment can be used immediately to optimise these procedures. Finally, thanks to the robotisation and automation made possible by 5G, new markets could emerge.
